Organizations fighting for human rights

When it comes to human rights a lot of time money and dedication goes into the cause this is why various organizations that have dedicated themselves to this work are considered inspirational.

The organizations take on various aspects of human and migrant rights and work towards the liberation of the people who for one reason or another may be oppressed. The following are some of the well known organizations that have been able to achieve that.

The Frontera fund

This was an organization started by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey who are both journalist career-wise. They began the Frontera fund as a way to fight for the Hispanic community around them but have now expanded to the entire Arizona area as well as countrywide.

The inspiration to begin the fund was as a result of an arbitrary arrest by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. These arrests were made in the middle of the night and what followed was a national outcry which then resulted in their release.

The duo of Jim and Michael then sued the county as well as the sheriff’s office for the infringement of their first amendment rights the ninth circuit court ruled that in fact their rights had been infringed upon and as a result, the county had to compensate them. The final settlement was reached in 2013 where they received 3.75 million dollars. This entire amount was dedicated towards the starting of the Frontera fund which today has achieved tremendous results in fighting for the rights of the Hispanic community that has for long suffered violations, especially around the border areas.

The reference to them as illegal migrants does not take away the human dignity that they should be accorded but this is something especially those tasked with enforcement tend to forget. The Frontera Fund works with others both individuals and organizations to ensure that there is equality for all.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International is one of the most known and highly regarded human rights organizations across the globe. They have endeavored to achieve this throughout that they were received the Nobel peace prize for their work. The organization continues to work with communities and governments worldwide in the hope of achieving more freedom for their citizens.

Michael Lacey, Jim Larkin, and the Frontera Fund

Lacey and Larkin had both started the Phoenix New Times paper when they got into trouble for revealing subpoenas that targeted their writers, editors, and readers in a massive faux pas to the Constitution. These days the Phoenix New Times is an online newspaper with a web page, rather than less printed copies available. Joe Arpaio arrested Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin because of the way they revealed this cop’s 24 years of scandals from this longtime enemy. Sheriff Arpaio advocated torture and racism.

He was responsible for beating deaths as well as inmate suicides. Trump pardoned Arpaio this year, despite how legal action was taken on the sheriff. Lacey and Larkin also co-own Village Voice Media while using their 2013 acquired $3.75 million dollar settlement money to fund migrant’s rights organizations in Arizona. These journalists were taken from their home one night on October 18th, 2007 after revealing the existence of legal proceedings in which they wanted reporter’s notes on the coverage of the sheriff. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is there to support groups that advocate for human rights, civil rights, and migrants to help the Hispanic community in their town.
