Dr. Saad Saad’s Two Important Life Lessons

Before retiring from his 47-year career as a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Saad Saad was the co-director and surgeon-in-chief of K Hovnanian Children Hospital. Dr. Saad Saad was born in the country of Palestine sometime in the late 1940’s but early on in his life his entire family, as well as a legion of other Palestinian families, was forced into leaving Palestine when the state of Israel was founded.

Fortunately for Dr. Saad Saad and his family, they were able to find a new home in the country of Kuwait, albeit as second-class residents without citizenship, without passports, and seemingly with no prospects of a future. This factual situation of the family was used by his father as a motivational tool to get a young Dr. Saad Saad to seriously pursue a high level of education so that he may be respected as an individual in Kuwait. Sometime during high school, Dr. Saad Saad became interested in becoming a pediatric surgeon.

This interest came about in part as a result of a heatstroke he suffered during a visit to a construction site, which dissuaded him from further seeking a career as an engineer.

To become a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Saad Saad traveled to Egypt where he studied medicine at Cairo University and ultimately graduating therefrom with honors and ranking number two in his entire class. The foregoing wonderfully illustrates Dr. Saad Saad’s first life lesson: “Don’t accept anything but the success you seek.”

Shortly after graduating, Dr. Saad Saad did an internship in the U. K. before immigrating to the United States to do a residency program in pediatric surgery. After completion of the residency program, Dr. Saad Saad applied to become and successful passed all tests to become a U.S. Board Certified Pediatric Surgeon.

He followed up this great accomplishment with another great one—becoming the personal pediatric surgeon to the Saudi royal family’s children. By no means is Dr. Saad Saad’s achievement limited to that of a pediatric surgeon.

He has also invented two medical devices of importance to medicine, one of which is an improved endoscope. Dr Saad Saad’s endoscope is an improvement to the existing endoscope in that it does not get fogged up. His endoscope is so functional and well received that it is currently being mass produced and used by doctors around the world.

Dr. Saad Saad’s second invention is a readily locatable catheter. In addition, Dr. Saad Saad has helped to make pediatric surgery procedures safer and easier to perform. He has developed several new procedures, one of which has made a previously required second incision unnecessary.

The result of this new procedure is that over two thousand children has not only been spared a second incision but also the possible complication that may occur as a result of it. Everything Dr. Saad Saad achieved in his life wonderfully illustrates Dr. Saad Saad’s second life lesson: “Never wait until tomorrow to accomplish a task you can complete today.”
